By comparison they were cheaper by about 35% with a 90 safety score. I was actually able to get higher coverage for rentals / liability so even still it was a 35% savings. After driving for about a month I've gotten my safety score up to 97. They are giving me another 35% savings. If you're younger, it could be the reason it's so much even if your record is clean. That being said, the Tesla insurance quote for me was a bit more than what I'm paying now, but not nearly what your quote is.
